Curriculum

Parish Religious Education builds on different textbooks for different age levels.

Preschool 3 - Kindergarten: In these age groups we use the "Discover God" program published by Sadlier.
It seeks to introduce the preschool child to the Catholic community's life of faith. While developing a child's human resources, it presents the faith in a language that young the child can understand. Presenting human life as a gift of God, the program engages the child's senses in incremental experiences of God, the gift of his Son, Jesus, the gifts of family, Catholic community, Scripture, sacraments, and prayer.
Preschool 1 (3-year-olds) - Discovering God's Child -- Explores God's gift of ourselves
Preschool 2 (4-year-olds) - Discovering God's World -- Explores God's gift of creation
Kindergarten -- Discovering God's Love -- Explores God's gift of love with family and Church community

1st - 6th grade: "Blest Are We" published by Silver Burdett Ginn is the basic textbook used.
The philosophy of the program: " Parish, family and catechist make up the indispensable "we" that constitute the community of faith. This program seeks to strengthen the partnership of home, parish community, and catechesis. It sees the whole parish as the place where life of faith is nurtured."

1st grade - God is present in our lives and in our community. Blest Are We helps children at this level come to know God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The children become aware of Jesus Christ present in the Eucharist and in the Church community. They learn to praise and thank him in prayer, song, and through creative expression.

2nd grade - We come together to celebrate God’s forgiveness and to be nourished in Christ. Blest Are We helps children at this age fully enter into the community of the Church to celebrate God in word and in sacrament.

3rd grade - We are called to spread the good news to others. Blest Are We helps children at this age recognize the mission of the Catholic Church by giving them the opportunity to learn about their faith and to grow in service to others.

4th grade - We are called to live God’s law of love. Jesus teaches us to love, forgive, and live in service. Blest Are We helps children at this age to know God’s laws and to desire to imitate Christ. They learn that a Christian moral life is a life of prayer, lived in love and forgiveness, service toward others, guided by the Church and nourished by the grace of the sacraments.

5th grade - Through the sacraments we receive God’s sanctifying grace and are enabled to see God in others and in ourselves. Blest Are We helps these children to understand the gift of the seven sacraments and the Christian call to live a life of virtue, free from sin.

6th grade - The Bible is the book of the Church, our family story of faith. Blest Are We helps young people at this age understand the place of the word of God in our lives, with special emphasis on our Old Testament roots. Bible stories, visuals that teach, and background information help salvation history come alive, activities, discussion, and prayers enable them to "hear the word, and live it."

7th-8th grade: We developed a four-semester curriculum where each of the semesters builds on the previous one, thus providing a solid foundation for Confirmation preparation.

The catechetical format includes ritual, prayer, song, scripture, and tradition to help the youth deepen their Catholic identity.

Every semester we have a special theme to augment the textbooks, and highlight a major topic in our Catholic faith. For the fall of 2003 this theme is Prayer. Children throughout PRE learn and practice different forms of prayer at age-appropriate levels.
