8th Grade Confirmation Requirements
Service Requirements Confirmation candidates are required to do service hours to demonstrate how we put our faith into action. Please get started on this early so you won't be scrambling at the end of the year. If you have questions, please contact the Confirmation instructors. Students are responsible for filling out Service Completion Forms (available on this website), getting them signed and placing them in their folders during class. Personal - This is service performed on your own. You may satisfy this requirement with service either to the community of the Holy Spirit parish or to some other worthy recipient. Twelve (12) hours of personal service are needed. Small group - This is service performed in concert with others, preferably members of your Confirmation class. You will have opportunities to serve in groups with the Confirmation class, including working in the soup kitchen, participating in the Haiti Tour D'Espirit and cleaning up after Wednesday night suppers. Group service hours also may be awarded for work with school and scouting groups. Ten (10) hours of group service are needed. Sponsor - service performed with your sponsor. This project needs to be at least four (4) hours long. One (1) reflection paper, written in conjunction with your sponsor, is needed for this category. Devotional Requirements
Devotional requirements help the Confirmation candidates understand that there are many ways to worship and pray in the Catholic tradition. Students are responsible for filling out Devotional Completion Forms (available on this website), getting them signed and placing them in their folders during class. A total of four (4) devotional credits are needed for this requirement. There will be eight Prayer & Pizza opportunities through the year. These run from 6:30-7:15 p.m. roughly one Sunday a month (see Confirmation schedule). Each is worth ½ hour credit. Other devotional credit may be earned by such acts as attending Mass on days other than Sundays or holy days, going to Reconciliation, praying with the Blessed Sacrament on Fridays, praying the Stations of the Cross, praying the rosary with your family. Attendance Requirements
In order to be prepared to make the sacrament of Confirmation in the spring, there is a large amount of material that must be covered. Our preparation process includes guest speakers, lectures, group discussions, small group discussions and other interactive mediums. Due to the quantity of the material, the cumulative nature of the material and the interactive mediums of instruction, it is essential that each candidate be in attendance every week. If a candidate has a valid reason for missing class (illness, serious and valid scheduling conflict, etc.), we ask that the parent notify us and we will help the student to make up the material. If the student is habitually absent and/or the parent and student do(es) not make an effort to make up the work, we will call the parent to set up a conference to evaluate the possibility of postponing Confirmation of the candidate. |
