SACRAMENTAL LIFE

ANOINTING OF THE SICK

The Sacrament of the Sick is administered to anyone who requests it at any time, whether at home or in the hospital. Occasionally a communal anointing is celebrated at the church. Parishioners preparing for serious surgery are encouraged to receive the sacrament following one of the weekday Masses, so that more of the parish community can participate in the prayer. See the web page on Ministry to the sick (Parish Social Ministry: Inreach Ministry) for particulars on long-term care for those at home, in hospitals or in nursing homes.

BAPTISM

The Sacrament of Baptism is occasionally celebrated during Sunday Masses, but more frequently at other times. To schedule the baptism of an infant or young child, please call the parish office (754-7146). A preparation program is required for first-time parents. Godparents are also encouraged to participate. For the baptism of a teenager or adult, please consult Evangelization: RCIA (Faith Inquiry).

CONFIRMATION

The Sacrament of Confirmation is celebrated annually by the Bishop of the Diocese, generally in the spring. Preparation includes special catechetical sessions, retreats and service projects. Parents and sponsors are encouraged to participate in selected activities. An adult who wishes to be confirmed should contact one of the priests.

FIRST EUCHARIST

The Sacrament of First Eucharist is offered to second graders and above. Parents of children wishing to celebrate First Eucharist in the spring should notify the Director of Catechetical Ministry by September 15. Children receive Holy Communion with their families during one of the regular Sunday liturgies in April or May. Children have to receive formal religious education either in the parish or at a Catholic school, and attend a workshop in the parish. Parents are required to attend two orientation sessions and the workshop. For specific dates please see the Calendar on the Parish Religious Education page.

FIRST RECONCILIATION

First Reconciliation is generally celebrated in the second grade, however we can make arrangements for older children’s preparation as well. Parents should inform the Director of Catechetical Ministry by September 15 if they wish their child to receive the sacrament during the coming year. Children have to receive formal religious education either in the parish or at a Catholic school, and attend a workshop in the parish. Parents are required to attend two orientation sessions and the workshop in the fall. For specific dates please see the Calendar on the Parish Religious Education page.

HOLY ORDERS

Any young man who feels that he is being called to the priesthood is encouraged to speak with one of the priests or with the Diocesan Director of Vocations.

MATRIMONY

Engaged couples contemplating the Sacrament of Marriage should contact one of the priest or deacons at least six months before the projected wedding date. All couples will enter into a specially tailored preparation program. Couples can inquire about the availability of the Worship space and/or the Batson Center by calling one of our parish secretaries at 754-7146.
