HISTORY

In February, 1975, Bishop Carroll Dozier of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Memphis established the Church of the Holy Spirit as a community of believers attempting to make Jesus Christ present under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

The small community of 60 families first celebrated the Eucharist at St. Joseph Hospital East (now St. Francis Hospital), then at Christian Brothers High School, and then at the Balmoral Cinema. On Saturday, July 1, 1978, the first Mass was celebrated in the new church on the 4 1/2 acre site at Hickory Crest.

During the last six months of 1978 membership doubled from 200 to 400 families. The number of registered families continued to increase, and now stands at 1,100.

An additional four acres was acquired, and the Family Life Center (now Batson Center) was dedicated in Sept., 1985. It well serves the parish, Memphis-area Catholic organizations and the wider community.

In 1992 we purchased twenty acres south of the church, including the wooded area that provides our beautiful "natural stained glass" windows. A new Pastoral Office building, athletic fields, expanded parking and a new entrance off Messick were completed in 1994.

In 1994, Father Albert Kirk was named pastor by Bishop Buechlein.
Our current bishop is Bishop Terry Steib.

In 1999 we completed a redecoration of our Worship space, Conference Room and Batson Center. At present the Pastoral and Finance Councils are considering additional space to enhance our adult formation, youth ministry and social ministry.

We thank God for the dedication of the clergy and staff, the founding members, and the many families who have worshipped and worked here. We feel truly blessed to be a part of this enthusiastic community and look forward to new members joining us as we continue our journey of faith.
